Grades have always been seen as the most important criterion in the academic field. But what if what we do outside the classroom can also add points to our applicant profile?

Extracurricular activities are all those actions we perform outside the school academic program, which can take place inside or outside of school, and focus on cultural, social, sporting, and even academic themes. From helping a sibling understand a math problem or participating in the Leadership School, to competing in sports federations or developing social projects at an international level. They all count, as each demonstrates an aspect of our personal skills that can make a difference when applying for an award, a scholarship, or even a university.
How to choose an extracurricular activity?
Extracurriculars speak volumes about us as students and members of our community; that is why, when choosing, we should take into account:
Activities related to topics you truly like or interest you
For example, if you care about the impact of pollution in your neighborhood, you can join a cleanup volunteer group or start an awareness campaign.
According to your time and availability
It is not worth getting involved in activities that do not even fit into your schedule. Look for spaces where you are free so you can use that time to carry out your extracurriculars.
Aligned with your strengths and skills
For example, if you are a good speaker or debater, you can sign up for debate clubs or MUNs.
Authentic
Innovative activities are the most valuable; look for out-of-the-box ideas or activities that have a positive impact within your community or school environment.
Focus on depth and not quantity
One activity with purpose and vision is always better than a thousand activities that only serve to fill your profile. Focus on a few and work as hard as you can on them so that they are relevant and have a high impact on your community.
Measure impact with figures
Take note of all the figures that demonstrate the impact and commitment of your activities. For example, if you carried out a volunteer project, include the hours you dedicated per week, how many people joined the team, how many benefited, etc.
Consider the resources needed to implement the activity
It is important to keep in mind what you will need to carry out your project or activity. Aim for it to be something achievable with the resources you have available or that you can obtain for its execution, allowing you to achieve a real impact in your community.
Working on your extracurricular activities requires a lot of effort and hard work, which is why it is best to start early and be consistent. It is also vital that it is something you are truly passionate about and adds to your profile so that it can help you stand out among the rest of the applicants.
